Since 1948 the church of Our Lady of Good Aid has had two distinct functions: it has been the Cathedral church of the Diocese and the parish church for Motherwell.

As the photographs of the changes in the sanctuary indicate, the four bishops who have served the Diocese have each introduced changes in the interior of the church in order to enhance the liturgical dignity of worship.
