Study day for Catechists 

The Diocese of Motherwell and Maryvale Institute, Birmingham, began their partnership in adult formation with a study day on Saturday 25th January. Fifteen adults from throughout the diocese have inscribed to train as catechists. Fr Thomas Magill, Episcopal Vicar for Mission and Evangelisation, commented: " It's wonderful to see so many people committed to and enthused by their faith, with a real eagerness to learn more and a desire to spread the Good News in service of our Lord and his Church. Sunday of the Word of God

This Sunday, 26th January, the Third Sunday of Ordinary Time, the Church is invited to be particularly devoted to the celebration, study and dissemination of the Word of God. Pope Francis established this celebration last September, in his Apostolic Letter Motu Proprio "Aperuit illis". The title of the document, "Aperuit illis", refers to St Luke's Gospel where the Evangelist describes how the Risen Lord appeared to His disciples. and how 'He opened their minds to understand the scriptures'. Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes 2020

The Pastoral theme of the Sanctuary of Lourdes in 2020, “I am the Immaculate Conception”, reminds us of these words spoken by Our Blessed Lady to Bernadette at the grotto of Massabilelle on the 25th March 1858. Four years earlier the dogma of Mary, as the Immaculate Conception, had been defined by Pope Pius IX; Mary the mother of Jesus had been conceived without the stain of original sin. Fr Maguinness appointed General Secretary of Bishops' Conference

The Bishops of Scotland have appointed Fr Gerard Maguiness to be the new General Secretary of the Bishops' Conference. Fr Maguiness is currently Parish Priest of St Ignatius’ Wishaw, in the Diocese of Motherwell. He succeeds Fr Jim Grant who was appointed in 2018. Commenting on the appointment, Bishop Hugh Gilbert, President of the Bishops’ Conference of Scotland said; “I am delighted to welcome Fr Gerard to his new post and together with all the members of the conference, look forward to working with him in future. Bishop Toal has announced the following clergy appointments within the Diocese. Bishop Toal wishes to thank the priests who have agreed to move and for their ministry in their positions. FATHER JAMES GRANT Father Grant, at present the General Secretary of the Bishops’ Conference of Scotland has been appointed Parish Priest of St Francis Xavier’s, Carfin, and Guardian of The National Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes, Carfin. He will take up this appointment from the weekend of 8th/9th February in succession to Father Francis McGachey who stood down in December 2019 on health grounds.
