  • MEMORIAL MASS FOR CANON PAT O'HARE

There will be a Memorial Mass for Canon Pat in his former parish of St. Thomas’ Wishaw on Monday 16th May at 7.00pm. The main celebrant will be Bishop Toal and the preacher for this occasion will be Fr. Harry O’Brien, one of Canon Pat’s former assistant priests.


  • DIOCESAN EUCHARISTIC PROCESSION - FEAST OF THE BODY AND BLOOD OF THE LORD - Sunday May 29th, Carfin Grotto, 3.00pm

As with last year, there will be a ‘Corpus Christi Procession’ in the grounds of Carfin Grotto beginning at 3.00pm. This year, the Feast of the Body and Blood of the Lord coincides with the worldwide Jubilee Year of Mercy event for deacons. For that reason, the permanent deacons of the diocese will play a prominent part in the procession and at its conclusion will renew their diaconal promises (in much the same way as priests do at the annual Chrism Mass).


  • IRISH DAY AT CARFIN - Sunday 5th June

The Annual Irish Pilgrimage Day takes place at the Irish Shrine in Carfin Grotto. Mass will be concelebrated on the Mass Rock at 3.00 pm. A warm welcome is extended to all who wish to join us for this celebration. In the case of inclement weather, Mass will be celebrated indoors.


  • DIOCESAN LOURDES MASS WITH BLESSING OF THE SICK - Sunday June 26th

The main celebrant at this Mass will be Bishop Toal. At the end of the Mass the sick will receive a blessing with the Most Blessed Sacrament as happens at Lourdes. The Mass will not feature the Sacrament of the Sick.

  • CATHOLIC TEACHERS' CERTIFICATE IN RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

The Bishop’s Conference of Scotland have asked you to include the following announcement in your parish newsletters:

The Bishops of Scotland wish to inform teachers and students looking to teach in Catholic schools about how they can gain the Catholic Teacher’s Certificate in Religious Education (CTC) in academic year 2016/17.

There are two options: (i) the Certificate in Religious Education by Distance-learning (CREDL) and (ii) Setting Out on the Road. Both options cost £200 for Catholic teachers or students residing in Scotland.

CREDL is the University of Glasgow route for qualified teachers, or for students studying an ITE programme at other universities. It is an on-line distance learning course and covers Aspects of Theological Education over two semesters. Applicants should enrol on both courses at the start of semester 1. Cost £200. (£455 with a subsidy of £255 from the applicant’s diocese.)

• ‘Setting Out On the Road’ is a course which introduces participants to ‘This Is Our Faith’, the Church’s R.E. syllabus and is managed by the Scottish Catholic Education Service. It offers a blended learning model of 4 study days and distance-learning across one school year. Cost £200. For details and on-line application, go to the SCES website.

  • ANNUAL FINANCIAL AND GENERAL PURPOSES MEETING IN CARFIN - Thursday 2nd June, 7.00pm.

This is the annual meeting where the diocese gives an account of how the diocesan finances have been spent. It is important that each parish be represented by their clergy and at least one member of the Parish Finance Team.

  • JUBILEE YEAROFMERCY EVENT FOR PRIESTS, FEAST OF THE SACRED HEART

"The priesthood is the love of the heart of Jesus” Curé of Ars

Pope Francis has asked that, during this Jubilee Year of Mercy, the priests of the world gather to celebrate their Priesthood on the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. In our diocese this event will take place on the vigil of the feast at ‘First Vespers’, 7.00pm in Holy Family church, Mossend. Evening Prayer which will conclude with Benediction.
